Wabi-sabi at home, without the cliché

Wabi-sabi has become a decor hashtag, often reduced to “beige and crumpled linen”. A pity, because the original idea runs deeper: finding beauty in the imperfect, the irregular, the unfinished — in what time does to things, rather than in spite of it.

Applied to the home, it comes down to three choices: living materials that mark and develop patina (wood, terracotta, ceramic, stone), fewer objects but ones truly looked at, and accepting traces of use as biography rather than wear. A wabi-sabi interior isn't empty: it's inhabited, slowly.

Imperfection as the design

This is where solid wood becomes self-evident. A knot, a grain that runs wild, a fine check that opens and closes with the seasons: what industry calls defects, wabi-sabi calls patterns. A piece carved from a single block doesn't imitate this aesthetic — it is born of it.

That way of looking speaks to us directly: the very name Maison Miraku borrows from raku, the Japanese ceramic whose every firing is unique and unpredictable, and our approach draws on kintsugi — the art of repairing with gold, honouring the break instead of hiding it. Repair, patina, pass on rather than replace: it's the same thread.

Where to start at home? Not by redoing everything. Remove rather than add, keep what has a story, and bring in a single piece of living material — a wood whose grain resembles no other. Place it where the light falls. The rest of the room will tune itself around it, naturally.
