Oil, wax or varnish: which finish for solid wood?

The finish is what separates raw wood from a finished object — and it decides how your furniture will live, age and be repaired. Oil, wax, varnish: three philosophies more than three products. Here's an honest way to tell them apart.

Varnish (and its modern cousin, floor-grade sealer) forms a hard film on the surface. It protects very well against stains and water — that's its strength. Its weakness: when it fails, it fails by chipping. A deep scratch or a chip can't be fixed locally; you have to sand the whole surface and re-varnish everything. On a piece you mean to keep for decades, that's a mortgage.

Oil: protection that penetrates

Oil doesn't coat the wood: it soaks into it. The surface stays matte or satin, warm to the touch — you feel the material, not a plastic skin. Above all, it can be repaired forever: a marked area is lightly sanded, re-oiled, and melts back into the whole. It's the finish we use on all our pieces, precisely for that repairability.

And wax? On its own it gives a beautiful lustre but weak protection: it marks with water and heat, and needs frequent refreshing. It excels, however, as a comfort layer over oil, for a deeper satin on pieces that see little exposure. The oil + wax duo is the interior cabinetmaker's great classic.

In short: varnish for hard-worn surfaces you accept redoing entirely one day; oil for furniture you want to see age and be handed down; wax as a comfort complement. If you hesitate, ask yourself one question: the day the first scratch arrives, will you want to fix it in ten minutes — or start over?
